The Queen has always worn this Leek brooch when participating in events involving the Welsh Guards, dating back to the 1970s. A significant part of Welsh history is leeks. The origin of the emblem dates back to a fight against the Saxons, during which St. David commanded the Welsh soldiers to identify their side by placing leeks in their hats.
