Monaco doesn’t really have a traditional jewelry collection that is passed down through the generations, unlike many European dynasties. When Princess Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier in 1956, she had to start over. A set from French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels served as the foundation for her collection.

Van Cleef sent Prince Rainier a sample of the pearl and diamond parure that the jeweler handed her. Because Rainier liked the jewels so much, he purchased the full set from the New York jeweler’s boutique. In addition to the parure, the set comprised earrings, a tiny bracelet, and a necklace made of cultured pearls.
