Among the Royal Collection’s oldest items is the Cambridge Sapphire Parure. In 1818, the Parure first appeared. Its name comes from August of Hesse-Kassel, Duchess of Cambridge, who married Prince Adolphus in 1818 and rose to the title of duchess. On her daughter’s wedding day in 1943, the Duchess gave her the Cambridge Sapphire Parure.

The parure was passed down the line to Queen Mary of Teck, who had a fondness for modifying each and every jewel she came into possession of. The Parure’s earliest sections date back to 1800. Mary of Teck enhanced the set by increasing the tiara’s sapphire count.
