To the delight of American military historians, the USS Grayback, a U.S. Naval submarine that had been missing for over eight decades, was found off the shore of Okinawa, Japan, in 2019. For Lost 52, a project aimed at finding the ruins of every American submarine lost in World War II, this finding was a major victory.
Discovered submarine after 75 years
Ten months after it departed Pearl Harbor in 1944, the Grayback was lost on a combat patrol.Although Lost 52 was able to locate the Grayback, there was some sadness associated with the discovery. It was particularly “sobering” because the submerged submarine was discovered alongside the remains of 80 Naval men.
