Temperatures rose drastically, reaching 356 degrees Fahrenheit as the scientists kept digging.  The rock was also very soft, and the Russian team knew that they had to abandon the project, lest their equipment be destroyed. The Kola Superdeep Borehole was officially shut down in 1995.

Measuring around 3.2 feet wide, the main hub wasn’t even the most impressive part. The nest also featured a long tunnel that the wasps had built going from the inside of the property to the outside. Pest control professionals were quickly called in to dispose of it safely.

The USS Grayback, a U.S. Naval Submarine that had been missing for almost eight decades, was discovered off the coast of Okinawa, Japan in 2019, much to the delight of U.S. military historians. This discovery marked a huge win for Lost 52, a project dedicated to uncovering the wrecks of all U.S. submarines lost in the Second World War.

The Grayback left Pearl Harbor in 1944, and it was lost in a combat patrol ten months later. Lost 52 was able to pin down the Grayback’s location, but the discovery wasn’t all elation. It was also “sobering,” as the remains of eighty Naval soldiers were found along with the sunken sub.

Archaeologists went on to discover a six-acre African burial ground with more than 15,000 intact skeletons, shedding light on the country’s dark colonial history. The remains were thought to date back to between 1630-1795, and their causes of death were never uncovered.
