8. Starting to Look and Feel Good
Jose’s looks initially drew attention to the physical toll 25 years of homelessness had caused. His untamed beard and long, grey hair now clearly expressed his life situation rather than only physical characteristics. His appearance was neglected over the past quarter-century not only for looks but also for the everyday struggle of survival that had come first over personal hygiene. But there was obvious excitement in the air as Salvia started to work. The possibility of metamorphosis appeared to rouse something in Jose—a long-dormant need to once more care about his appearance. Salvia’s knowledge and this openness for change produced the ideal environment for a significant metamorphosis transcending simple appearance.
