6. Taking The First Step

The moment Jose entered Salvia’s elegant salon was turning point in his path. Having lived on the streets for 25 years, the immaculate salon felt exotic and threatening to him. His present circumstances and the nice surroundings were quite different, which made one nearly uncomfortable. His reluctance stemmed mostly from the psychological effects of long-term homelessness, a sense of alienation in settings connected with luxury and wealth. The fact that he was getting these free of charge just made him more uncomfortable since it questioned his sense of value. Still, Jose’s will to welcome change proved more than his suffering. Sometimes the toughest part of any road is just walking through the door; his resolve to stay despite feeling out of place showed amazing bravery and a real desire for change.
