The M109A7 is the most recent iteration of the M109 howitzer, a turreted, self-propelled, 155mm howitzer that was initially developed in the 1960s to replace the M44. The engine, tracks, and transmission of the M109A7 are identical to those of the BFV. This has maximized the amount of money saved.

The same technology used in the Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon is also included in the M109A7. Faster electric motor and improved automatic rammer (more precise and reliable velocities) are two upgrades over earlier models. At 78,000 pounds, the M109A7 weighs a full 10,000 pounds more than its predecessor. The Army has declared that it intended to equip the M109A7 with an XM1113 RAP.
