The enormous sinkhole, known as Cenote Angelita, is the source of the river. It appears that this river empties into the ocean 90 feet below the surface. It is surrounded by a thick layer of hydrogen sulfide, which would kill anyone who tried to breathe it in right away. A tiny skeleton and several petrified trees can be found in the obscene cloud, adding to the unsettling atmosphere. Perhaps the ancient Mayans had a point when they said that the Cenote Angelita was a portal to Hell.
