Researchers in Sichuan, China have discovered not one, but two golden masks at the Sanxingdui Dig. The half-pound mask discoveries were firsts. Since its discovery in 1929, Sanxingdui has produced a wide variety of artefacts, but until these masks, the level of artistry and opulence had not been shown.

The 500-piece cache, which also contained a bronze head, urn, jade knife, and other artefacts, was discovered containing the foot-long golden masks that were fashioned by ancient humans. Although a half-pound of gold is currently worth approximately $11,196, the historical significance of this mask makes it likely far more expensive.
