An unexpected discovery was made in September 2013 at the bottom of a lake: a plane. The submerged plane was found by a dive team practicing for the Charlotte, North Carolina fire department, and they notified the Federal Aviation Administration of their discovery. Sonar technologies helped them identify the aircraft to some extent.

The plane was a Lake LA-4 Amphibian Aircraft, according to the F.A.A. It was buried under ninety feet of water and was not visible from the surface of Lake Norman. The pilot, a citizen of North Carolina, was killed when the aircraft went down in 1974.
