It turns out that these kite-like wires, found by R.A.F. pilots in the early 1900s, served as enormous animal traps. Chains stretching forty kilometres were created by connecting some of these lines. These 2,400-year-old kites were employed as animal traps to concentrate gazelles and other large animals in one location so they could be collected for sustenance. These animals were effectively trapped by the kites, giving the prehistoric peoples attempting to survive in the hostile desert a handy supply of food.
