These stone balls, referred to locally as Las Bolas, have baffled researchers ever since they were found in the 1930s. There are about three hundred of these spheres throughout Costa Rica; their diameters range from a few inches to about seven feet. There are Las Bolas that weigh up to fifteen tonnes.

Indigenous groups that were there when Spain conquered Costa Rica, like the Teribe, Guaymi, and Boruca, are presumably the ones who created the petrospheres. The spheres have been dated to between 800 and 1500 A.D., but their purpose is still unknown.
