9. The Old Town Shopping Center

Location: Baltimore, Maryland’s Gay Street
1818 is the year.
Cost: $1.7 million for the 1968 revival.
Baltimore, Maryland, was once a major East Coast American landmark, but it has mostly fallen into disrepair and now has high rates of poverty, crime, and unemployment. Baltimore became a vibrant, diversified metropolis when the Old Town Mall was established in the 1800s. However, many families relocated to the suburbs after World War II, and Gay Street—the street where the Old Town Mall is situated—became dilapidated as a result.

Old Town Mall failed despite a $1.7 million makeover following the destruction of the 1968 Baltimore Riots. Though a haunted house appropriately opens there each year before Halloween, the neighborhood is largely deserted these days.
