A bacterial illness that wreaks havoc on the lungs is tuberculosis. The current course of treatment consists of rigorous seclusion and an antibiotic regimen. To stop the spread, sanatoriums—locations specifically designed to treat tuberculosis patients—were established. In order to provide TB patients with sunshine and fresh air, the Barlow Sanatorium was established in 1902; some patients spent years there. Barlow is currently a respiratory hospital, but the buildings from its former sanatorium are still standing.
