15. Durán Sanatorio

In 1918, Carlos Cartin, a politician and physician from Costa Rica, established Sanatorio Duran, a tuberculosis recovery hospital, to assist in the treatment of his ill daughter. Sanatorio Duran was situated in a rural area to maximize natural light, fresh air, and pleasant temperatures. Cartin’s daughter, regrettably, did not survive.

Following her death, Sanatorio Durán, Potrero Cerrado, Costa Rica, @atlasobscura/Pinterest Duran continued to operate, manned by sisters from the charity Santa Anna. The hospital’s grounds are rumored to be haunted by the spirits of these sisters and the children who died from tuberculosis. The sanatorium was also once utilized as a mental asylum. Sanatorio Duran is reputed to be Costa Rica’s most haunted hospital.
