11. The Pavilion of the Witch’s Hat

Location: Reading, Pennsylvania’s Neversink Mountain
1892 is the year.
Cost: $4.142 million to create the Neversink Mountain Hotel.
Previously, a collection of upscale, opulent hotels valued at $4.142 million (adjusted for inflation) were built on Eversink Mountain, a hiking trail in Reading, Pennsylvania. Travelers from Philadelphia and NYC would take the train up the hillside during the warm months to stay in Reading and experience the pleasant, bucolic country air.

The last trace of the opulence of the nineteenth century is now an abandoned stone pavilion known as “The Witch’s Hat.” Given that it resembles the headgear of a character from Halloween, it creates an eerie atmosphere. Even after being abandoned and severely destroyed by arsonists, Neversink still provides breathtaking views of the mountains on clear days.
