62. Raffi Torres: Repeat Offender

Year of Fine: 2015
Est. Fine Total: $441,000*
Playing a professional sport comes with its share of dangerous situations. Especially when the athletes are holding wooden sticks, skating down the ice at tremendous speeds, and lining up across from NHL tough guy Raffi Torres — a man notorious for cheap shots on unsuspecting opponents.

In a preseason game in 2015, already with a history of injuring other players with illegal hits, Torres set his sights on Jakob Silverberg. Due to the headshot Raffi Torres laid on Silverberg, he was handed a 41-game suspension (half a season) and lost $441,000 from his personal wealth.

63. Big Ben Flagged For Misconduct

Year of Fine: 2010
Est. Fine Total: $1.9 million*
By the start of the 2010 season, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had already spent his share of time in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. While already dealing with sexual assault allegations, Big Ben faced yet another accuser.

No charges were filed against Roethlisberger, but the NFL still felt it necessary to teach the QB a lesson. The Steelers’ QB was handed a 6 games suspension for “violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy,” which was later taken down to just 4 games. Missing those 4 games cost the future Hall of Famer approximately $1.9 million in salary.

64. Terry’s Trash Talk Goes Too Far

Year of Fine: 2012
Est. Fine Total: $330,000*
In 2012, John Terry, then a captain for the Chelsea Football Club, was accused of racially insulting Anton Ferdinand from Queens Park Rangers. Terry was subsequently investigated by the police and cleared of all charges. But not before incurring a series of penalties.

The FA started Terry’s penalty extravaganza with a 4-match suspension. A $330,000 fine was next, which wasn’t even the worst. Terry had his England captaincy stripped, and Chelsea (his league club) fined him what is said to be the largest fine the club had handed a player till then.

65. Antonio Brown Fined For Excessive Celebration

Year of Fine: 2012
Est. Fine Total: $11,576*
In 2015, the NFL handed Antonio Brown a small fine (as far as he’s concerned). Known for his excessive celebrations and over-the-top showmanship, his untameable urge to gloat after scoring a touchdown against the Colts got Antonio in trouble this time.

Instead of a classic TD celebration, Brown launched himself groin-first at the goalpost, then proceeded to straddle-hug the post. The NFL let a lot of hijinks go over the years, but this was too much. It was decided Brown violated the league’s unsportsmanlike conduct rules, and he was handed a fine of $11,576.

66. Mutu Can’t Keep His Nose Clean

Year of Fine: 2004
Est. Fine Total: $22.7 million*

The FA also forced Mutu to pay Chelsea around $22.7 million in compensation due to his breach of contract. This incident was one of the earliest examples of the FA’s commitment to enforcing strict punishments for drug use. The argument also exists that perhaps Mutu was penalized so heavily to be made an example of.

67. Talib Fined For An Eye Poke

Year of Fine: 2014
Est. Fine Total: $354,779*
In 2014, Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib was involved in a good old fashion shoving match that resulted in him eye-poking Indianapolis Colts player Dwayne Allen. Mind you, this wasn’t intentional eye-gauging. The incident occurred when Talib stepped into the fight to defend a teammate.

The next thing Talib knew, he grabbed an opponent’s face mask. Whether he meant it to happen or not, his finger slipped through the mask and poked Allen in the eye. Aqib Talib was given a 1-game suspension totaling just over $350,000 for not keeping his hands to himself.

68. Mario Balotelli Goes Viral For The Wrong Reasons

Year of Fine: 2014
Est. Fine Total: $39,000*
In 2014, Italian footballer Mario Balotelli became the latest high-profile athlete to receive a hefty fine for inappropriate behavior caught on social media. It wasn’t an embarrassing picture or anything like that. Balotelli posted what he believed was an ironic anti-racism cartoon.

Mario clearly misjudged how everyone else would view his META post. The cartoon was loaded with stereotypes; needless to say, it was not taken well. Although Balotelli has since apologized profusely for the insensitive post, that wasn’t enough to clear him of his $39,000 fine.

69. Kadri Takes A Dive

Year of Fine: 2016
Est. Fine Total: $5,000*
Nazim Kadri has been fined or penalized a few times in his career for diving or embellishment of contact. In 2016, the NHL levied a $5,000 fine on Kadri after he engaged in what league officials deemed to be a series of intentional dives to draw penalties.

Not being his first diving offense, or the first time he’s been fined, it’s clear the NHL is buckling down on calling out players trying to draw penalties with excessive theatrics. Kadri should have learned his lesson by now, but if history has taught us anything, players are likelier to hone their craft than change it.

70. Papelbon Jeopardizes His Relationship With The Hometown Fans

Year of Fine: 2014
Est. Fine Total: $497,267*
In a 2014 game, Jonathan Papelbon, the closer for the Philadelphia Phillies, reacted to boos from home fans by grabbing his crotch and shouting obscenities. As it turns out, neither the league nor the team took kindly to Papelbon’s lack of professionalism.

The closer was suspended 7 games, which cost him almost half a million dollars. For anyone hoping for a fairytale ending for Jonathan and Philly fans, you won’t find it here. Papelbon’s tenure in “the city of brotherly love” ended less than a year later.

71. Ochocinco Nabbed For ‘Bribery’

Year of Fine: 2009
Est. Fine Total: $20,000*
Chad Ochocinco had a knack for endearing himself to fans, but the former NFL wide receiver once took things too far. In 2009, he was fined $20,000 for his “bribery” touchdown celebration in a game against the Cleveland Browns.

Ochocinco simulated giving money to an official after scoring a touchdown and was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The league ultimately decided the faux $1 bribe was worthy of a $20,000 fine. In true Ochocinco fashion, Chad was unapologetic and didn’t shy away from owning up to what he had done.
