Relatively recently, Ano Nuevo was connected to California’s northern coast via a small land bridge. Ano Nuevo was shut off from the state as water levels rose and a waterway formed between the island and mainland. Only people had abandoned their buildings.

Ano Nuevo is currently home to thousands of sea lions and seals, who are exploiting the former grounds as a site to repopulate their species. The most common visitors to Ano Nuevo are Steller Sea Lions and Northern Elephant Seals; therefore, it’s good to see this originally man-made structure transformed into a nature sanctuary. Although the region surrounding the island is strictly protected, swimming in the waters near Ano Nuevo is not advised due to the high shark population.
