4. The abandoned munitions plant in More Park

Rosemount, Minnesota, is the location.
Time: 1943
Cost to build: $4 million*

Over 12,000 acres of rural Minnesota farmland were determined to be in eminent domain by the US government during World War II. Together with a number of other artillery by-products, they established a facility to produce smokeless gun powder. Gopher Ordnance Works was operational when it started in 1945, but the war ended seven months later.

America’s need for massive amounts of gunpowder vanished after Hitler submitted, and the plant was shut down. The land was acquired by the University of Minnesota in the 1950s, and the factory’s remnants were left there. The remaining area was developed into UMore Park, a location for academic and agricultural research initiatives. Still, the ghostly manufacturing towers protrude over the Rosemount horizon.
