11. Protective Spider Associations

In a startling turn of events, certain spider species have evolved mutually beneficial interactions with termite nests. Near or inside termite nests, these spiders create their webs to help shield the colony from flying predators and parasites. The termites accept the presence of the spiders and, occasionally, even change their building behavior to fit these defensive neighbors. While the termites get extra protection against their natural adversaries, the spiders profit from the plenty of prey drawn to the termite colony. This interaction shows how in the natural world even seeming improbable couples may create cooperative methods for mutual advantage.
