The village of Hartley Mauditt in East Hampshire is not much to look at on a map, but the history of this abandoned settlement is fascinating. Since William the Conqueror handed the settlement to William de Maldoit, it was first recorded in the 1400s. The ownership of Hartley Mauditt shifted until the late 1700s.

Large farms spread across 1,400 acres made up the agricultural hamlet, which began to collapse in the late 1700s. Now all that remains are the remnants of a few cottages and the dilapidated parish church known as St. Leonard. These days, woodland animals and, if ghost stories are to be believed, spirits call this former Saxon settlement home.
