In the 1950s, a Roman Catholic lawyer named John Baptist Greco had the idea for Holy Land USA, an amusement park with a religious theme. At the time, Holy Land, USA, was distinctive not only for its anti-segregation policies but also for its religious attractions, which included a large cross, Israelite villages, catacombs, and stations of the cross.

In Waterbury, Connecticut, construction was completed in the late 1950s, and during the 1960s and 1970s, it drew 40,000 visitors annually. Greco closed Holy Land USA in 1984 in order to expand it, but the park remained incomplete and abandoned until he passed away in 1986.
