The Central Artery/Tunnel Project was the biggest and most difficult roadway project ever undertaken in the United States. The project’s difficult goal was to improve mobility in Boston, one of the oldest and most crowded cities in the nation. It also succeeded in enhancing the local environment by creating a foundation for Massachusetts’s and New England’s future development.

The project constructed two new bridges over the Charles River and a new subterranean highway using cutting-edge technical techniques. Despite obstacles including delays, bad design, overspending, and accusations of subpar execution, the project was successful in the end.
