Before Pippa Middleton married James Matthews in the spring of 2017, they enjoyed a quite low-key engagement. Pippa’s engagement ring, however, was one aspect of the whole affair that was not subdued. The enormous three-carat diamond was worth more than $300,000. The central Asscher diamond has royal provenance.

Given that Joseph Asscher created the diamond’s cut in 1902, it has a royal link. Asscher established a renowned diamond-cutting business and crafted jewelry for Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. Even now, more than a century later, asscher-cut diamonds are typically connected to riches and aristocracy.
