5. Slippers with Self-Parking

What it is: automatic slippers that can return to a predetermined location.
Average Cost: Not specified
Self-parking slippers are a blend of modern technology and traditional customs, even if they are not a necessary household item. Nissan popularized the concept when, in order to show off the accuracy of their car parking technology in a lighthearted and approachable manner, they displayed slippers fitted with their ProPILOT Park autonomous parking technology at a traditional Japanese inn (Ryokan). At the push of a button, the slippers, which include two tiny wheels, a motor, and sensors, can “drive” across the floor and neatly park themselves.

Self-parking slippers are a reflection of the larger trend of integrating smart technology into commonplace products, which goes beyond their initial novelty and fascination. Even though self-parking slippers may not be very useful, they are a testament to the potential for incorporating technology into even the most ordinary objects to create automated, interactive devices.
