Lotions and hand creams have an expiration date on the back that may be determined by glancing at an image of an open container. Typically, a “12M,” “24M,” or longer symbol will be shown. The number is the count, while the “M” stands for months. Hand creams typically have a one- to two-year shelf life, but always check the label to be certain.

Expiration date: hand cream frequently has an unpleasant smell, even if using it after that point might not be dangerous. It’s also possible that the cream won’t work as well, hydrating your hands less than you would like. It is advisable to discard the hand lotion and use a fresh container or jar in its place.
