This remarkable piece consists of a set of especially made instruments that use electrostatic charges to generate a broad spectrum of sounds. A large Van de Graaff generator producing a strong static charge drives the installation. Linked to this generator are several “electrostatic instruments” including metal rods, plates, and differently sized and composed spheres. These instruments vibrate in response to the stationary charge building and releasing, producing a surreal symphony of buzzes, hums, and crackling sounds. Dr. Chang’s work stands out for her creative use of computerised systems to control and modulate the stationary charges, so enabling exact musical compositions to be performed on this unusual “orchestra.” The result is an amazing fusion of science and art that questions our knowledge of both music and physics. Along with a one-of- a-kind audio experience, visitors to the exhibit are welcomed to see the obvious results of static electricity as sparks fly and hair rests on end.
