Attempting to Unlock It

James crouched in front of the vent, studying it closely. The more he examined it, the more its age became apparent. Unlike the newer features of the house, this vent seemed ancient, as though it had been part of the original structure long before any renovations or updates were done. Its weathered metal frame and rusted edges told a story of neglect, hidden away beneath layers of carpet and time. In a way, it made sense why it hadn’t been included in the blueprints for the updated house—it didn’t belong to the modern design. Instead, it was a relic of the past, something that had been deliberately overlooked or forgotten.

Determined to open it, James grabbed hold of the edges and pulled with all his strength. The rusted metal groaned under the pressure, but it refused to budge. The vent was sealed shut, as if it hadn’t been opened in decades—or perhaps as if someone had intentionally ensured it couldn’t be. Frustration began to creep in, but James wasn’t ready to give up just yet. He wiped his hands on his jeans, took a deep breath, and leaned in closer, inspecting every detail. There had to be a way to get it open. Whatever was inside felt important, and James couldn’t shake the feeling that uncovering it would bring him one step closer to understanding the strange events unfolding around them.
