Assuring Them

When the real estate agent arrived, she greeted them with a calm demeanor, doing her best to ease their growing concerns. She assured them that the house had been thoroughly cleaned prior to their move-in and that the heating system was brand new, installed just a few weeks ago. Her tone was confident, almost dismissive of the unusual events they described. “There’s really nothing to worry about,” she said with a reassuring smile, though her words did little to dispel the tension in the room. Mandy and James exchanged uncertain glances, their unease lingering despite her explanations.

Even with her reassurances, the couple couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. The strange occurrences—the smell, the noises, the growing sense of dread—didn’t seem like things that could be so easily explained away. They had hesitated to even call her at such a late hour, worried they might not reach her or that she wouldn’t take their concerns seriously. And now, as she stood before them, her confident assurances felt hollow. Deep down, they both knew that whatever was happening in the house went beyond faulty heating systems or overlooked cleaning. Something else was at play, something they couldn’t yet understand.
