The Howling

Just as Mandy was about to set the table for dinner, a sudden, piercing howl echoed through the house. It came from Scout, their usually calm and well-behaved dog. The sound stopped her in her tracks, her heart skipping a beat. Scout had never acted like this before. His howls were sharp, almost desperate, and seemed to reverberate off the walls, filling the house with an eerie tension. Mandy rushed to the living room, where she found him standing rigid, his ears pinned back and his gaze fixed on something she couldn’t see.

James joined her moments later, drawn by the unsettling noise. “What’s gotten into him?” he asked, his voice tinged with concern. Scout was normally quiet and easygoing, never one to bark or howl without reason. But now, he seemed agitated, almost afraid. Mandy knelt down to comfort him, but he wouldn’t settle. His eyes darted nervously around the room, as if he could sense something they couldn’t. The couple exchanged uneasy glances. Whatever was bothering Scout, it wasn’t normal—and it only added to the growing sense of unease that had been building in the house all day.
