Something Unseen

James was startled when Scout, his usually calm and friendly dog, suddenly began barking furiously. The sound echoed sharply through the room, breaking the tense silence that had settled since they opened the hidden door. “Quiet, Scout!” James whispered urgently, his voice low but firm. Yet the dog didn’t stop. Instead, Scout’s barks grew louder, more insistent, as if he were trying to warn them of something. His gaze was fixed on the far corner of the room, his body tense, his growls deep and guttural. But when James and Mandy turned to look, there was nothing there—no movement, no shadow, nothing that could explain the dog’s unsettling behavior.

Despite the empty corner, Scout refused to back down. He growled low in his throat, his hackles raised, his eyes locked on something neither James nor Mandy could see. The tension in the room thickened, and a cold, uneasy feeling crept over them. Mandy instinctively stepped closer to James, her voice barely above a whisper. “What’s he barking at?” she asked, her eyes darting nervously around the room. James didn’t answer. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Scout was sensing something they couldn’t—a presence, perhaps, or something hidden just out of sight. Whatever it was, the dog’s relentless barking filled the room with an air of unease, leaving them both frozen in place, unsure of what to do next.
