A Rotten Smell

The odor became so unbearable that Mandy and James were forced to leave the bedroom entirely. It was sharp, sour, and invasive, filling every corner of the space until it felt suffocating. No matter how much they tried to ignore it, the stench only seemed to intensify, making it impossible to stay. Mandy pressed her hand against her nose, her eyes watering from the foul air, while James paced the room in frustration. He inspected the vents, the corners, and even the floorboards, but there was no clear source of the smell. It wasn’t something they could simply air out or mask—it was as though the room itself had absorbed the offensive scent, and nothing they did seemed to help.

Eventually, they admitted defeat. There was no way they could sleep in that room. Gathering their essentials, they made the decision to move into one of the smaller guest bedrooms for the night. As they shut the door behind them, the smell still seemed to linger in their minds, haunting and inexplicable. James couldn’t stop wondering where it had come from, his thoughts racing with possibilities, while Mandy felt a growing unease. The house, which had once seemed so full of charm and promise, now felt unsettling, as if it were hiding something they weren’t meant to find.
