Finally, Some Rest

The snow outside was falling steadily, blanketing the world in a quiet stillness, but all Mandy could think about was finally getting some rest after a long and tiring day. James had turned on the heating system earlier, and the room was beginning to feel cozy, the chill of the old house slowly retreating. Mandy slipped into bed, pulling the heavy blankets around her, grateful for the warmth. James settled in beside her, and for the first time that day, they both felt a sense of calm. Mandy reached for her book, flipping to where she had left off, and began reading a few chapters, letting the words distract her from the lingering unease she had felt earlier.

But just as she was beginning to relax, an unfamiliar odor wafted into the room. It was faint at first, but quickly grew stronger, sharp and unsettling. Both Mandy and James froze, their peaceful moment shattered. They sat up in unison, exchanging worried glances. The smell wasn’t something they recognized—it wasn’t the scent of the old wood or the occasional drafts they had grown accustomed to since moving in. This was different, almost chemical, with an acrid edge that made Mandy’s stomach turn. James immediately got out of bed to investigate, while Mandy remained still, her heart racing. Whatever the source of the smell, it was clear that their night of rest was about to take an unexpected turn.
