4. The Steam Engine of SS Thistlegorm

Britain’s SS Thistlegorm was an armed Merchant Navy vessel built by Joseph Thompson & Sons. She cost more than $3 million to build in 1940. Before this tlegorm was sunk by German bombers in 1941, she had a number of successful journeys. She had undergone substantial refurbishment in Glasgow just prior to her sinking.

When this tank sank, her cargo included radio equipment, Bren guns, ammunition, and armored cars needed for the WWII effort in Egypt. Two Luftwaffe planes bombed her from above, destroying the ship and killing nine crew members in the process. In the 1950s and 1990s, Jacques Cousteau and Sharm el-Sheikh made new discoveries about the shipwreck.
