Of course, the Titanic immediately comes to mind when you think of cruise ships going down. However, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship accident is another, more recent example of a cruise ship disaster. The ship veered off course and collided with a rock structure on the sea floor in the Mediterranean. Sadly, thirty-four were lost to death.

The $513 million in insurance on the ship did not cover the $2 billion in total damage. Between $500 million and $1 billion worth of merchandise were lost. As you can guess, this tragedy resulted in numerous lawsuits and criminal investigations. These investigations revealed a twist: although ship officials were not aware of the contraband on board, the Costa Concordia was carrying a significant amount of cocaine held by the Italian Mafia at the time of its sinking.
