Not everything that is lost at sea is worth gold and silver. There was a massive shipwreck in the Florida Keys in 1622. The Tortugas ships sank during a violent storm, which frequently happens off the coast of Florida. Centuries later, the Odyssey Marine Exploration carried out a deep sea recovery that descended about 1,329 feet below the surface of the ocean.

This was the world’s first deep-sea recovery at the time. The turtledoves produced exquisitely crafted pottery and exquisite pearls. Gold, silver, indigo, tobacco, and cochineal, a sort of scarlet dye, were also discovered on the ships. The treasure was estimated to be worth $251,000 in all.
