Jamaica’s Port Royal used to be a bustling pirate city. Pirates, who were incentivized to attack Spanish Habsburg boats, called it home. Port Royal was renowned for its displays of wealth obtained from piracy and its “loose morals.” During the seventeenth century, Dutch and English pirates would spend their ill-gotten money there. Pirates traveled as far as Madagascar to get to Port Royal.

Sadly, on June 7, 1692, an earthquake devastated this celebration city. The city was inundated by a massive tsunami caused by the earthquake. Soon after, a number of more earthquakes and tsunamis occurred, submerging most of Port Royal under the ocean. What Mother Nature did not destroy was devastated by fires and a cholera epidemic in 1850. Since much of the land is still under water, there are just 2,000 people living in the destitute and dilapidated neighborhood.
