The practice of “deadheading” involves taking off dead blooms and stems from a plant that is otherwise healthy. Deadheading is simple. Just remove any browned or dried blooms or stems from the plant, being careful to preserve only the vibrant, green parts. Not only will your plant appear better, but it will flower for a longer period of time.

The plant will focus its energy on producing seed heads rather than more blossoms after it has been deadheaded. Not every plant needs to have its head cut off. This procedure is not necessary for plants such as lantana, nemesia, New Guinea impatiens, begonias, astilbe, baptisia, vinca, and sedum. But geraniums and Cosmos need to be deadheaded on a regular basis.
