9. Bridge on Aiola Island
Located in Austria’s Graz
Founded in 2003
Expense: $7.8 million *
Constructed in 2003, the Aiola Island Bridge is also referred to as the Mur Island Bridge. Thanks to Acconci Studio, led by designer Vito Acconci of New York City, it took a year to design. This unusual pedestrian bridge over the River Mur necessitated the construction of a fictitious island.

The biggest draw is the futuristic island itself. Acconci attributes the unique shape of the platform to his passion for “architectural styles and art…from the Middle Ages.” The two bridges that cross the River Mur to get to the island link the two sides of Graz, Austria. Mur Island is expected to last for fifty years.
