The Royal Gorge Bridge was constructed for a mere $350,000 in 1929—a sum that would be almost $5 million in modern currency. Prior to the completion of the Beipan River Bridge in China in 2003, the Royal Gorge Bridge held the title of the highest suspension bridge globally. The Royal Gorge, which descends 955 feet into the Grand Canyon, remains America’s tallest suspension bridge.

Nearly 1,300 wooden boards cover the bridge’s steel base construction. Depending on the season, passenger cars are permitted on the bridge both before and after park attractions close. One of Colorado’s most well-liked tourist destinations, the Royal Gorge Amusement Park, is connected to the bridge.
