The Gateshead Millennium Bridge spans the River Tyne and is designed for cyclists and pedestrians. It links the Gateshead arts district with Newcastle upon Tyne’s Quayside. The architects Wilkinson, Eyre, and Gifford designed the building. Because of its slanted design, the bridge is also known as the “Winking” or “Blinking Eye Bridge.”

In Tyneside, the Millennium Bridge is the fifteenth-tallest building. One of the biggest floating cranes in the world, the Asian Hercules II, pulled the bridge into position in its entirety. The bridge is rotated by a total of six hydraulic rams, enabling passage for boats and sailing ships. The rotation time from closed to open is under 4 and a half minutes.
