In contrast to some other ships that were lost on their first voyage, the Flor de la Mar survived for more than nine years before coming to a terrible end. Remarkably, the ship was returning to Portugal with loot from the conquest of Malacca to give to the king, sort of on a royal mission.

She took the cargo with her when the ship sank off the coast of Sumatra. Regretfully, it’s still unclear exactly where the ship is. Unbelievably much treasure is out there, festering beneath the waters, just waiting to be found.
