Year Disappeared: 1622 Year Discovered: While hurricanes still pose a threat to seafarers, ships are now far more prepared to handle them than they were in the sixteenth century. In 1622, the Santa Margarita was having difficulties while sailing close to Key West. Sadly for Spain, she was transporting a ton of loot in addition to passengers, including more than 166,000 pieces of eight.

The Spanish found the wreck a few years later, in 1626, and were able to retrieve some of the treasures from the depths. Expeditions, however, are still finding stray gold nuggets and other artifacts from the ship in more recent times.
