The first combat submarine to destroy a vessel was the H.L. Hunley. Sadly, she supported the Confederacy during her meager involvement in the Civil War. The USS Housatonic was successfully sunk by the Hunley in 1864, but she was unable to return to base.

The Mobile, Alabama-built forty-foot submarine sank three times. Three crew members perished when she sank in 1863 while on a test run. A few months later, she sank once more, this time killing eight people. She was raised again. When her torpedo detonated in 1864, killing eight Confederate soldiers, she was unable to withstand her final attack. She was found in 1995, and in 2000, she was dredged up.
