In 2014, the rich former CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, funded his own personal rescue effort. He attempted to raise the Saturn V rockets’ Rocketdyne F-1 engines from the ocean floor. The Apollo 11 mission, which launched the mission to land men on the moon, included the F-1 engines.

The Saturn V rocket’s initial stages were propelled by the five engines. They were released from the rocket and instantly sunk to the seafloor when they hit the Atlantic Ocean. It was anticipated that they would stay there indefinitely, but Bezos managed to bring them back from the brink by attempting to unearth these “testament[s] to the Apollo program.”
