Who Found It: John Adams Whipple and William Bond
Where: Lyra
With the exception of the Sun, Vega was the first star to be captured on camera in July 1850. William Bond and John Adams Whipple captured the picture at the Harvard College Observatory. The brightest star in the Lyra constellation to the north is Vega. Only 25 light-years separate it from Earth.

Vega can be seen in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer sky. The star, which is around 450 million years old, was the North Star for several millennia and will do so once more in 12,000 years.
