4. A Living Relic

Found Year: 2016.
Who Found It: DGSAT I
Location: W. M. Keck Observatory
Although the galaxy DGSAT I was identified in 2016, its luminosity was significantly less than that of other galaxies. Not too long after, scientists found a “living fossil” in this galaxy, which was undoubtedly exceptional.

DGSAT I is classified as an ultra-diffuse galaxy, meaning that although being as large as a galaxy like the Milky Way, its stars are so thinly dispersed that they are hardly discernible. Scientists deduced that DGSAT I is a living fossil that emerged only a billion or so years after the Big Bang after observing that it is alone, which is unusual for ultra-diffuse galaxies.
