4. Hold On Tight
Although seagulls are all too familiar to beachgoers for swooping in and pilfering food, Wilhelm takes this usual nuisance to a humorous excessive degree. Apparently in this ingenious manoeuvre, the seagull has changed its prey from simple sandwiches to little toddlers! The picture catches a moment of extreme beach danger, where usually annoying birds have morphed into child-snatching creatures. With the dramatic arrangement and warning to “watch out and hold on tight,” a common beach annoyance becomes an interesting cautionary tale. This work is both frightening and quite funny because of the ideal timing and expression caught in the picture.
