1. Seed Starter Citrus Rind

Materials required: water, seeds, soil, and citrus rinds
Making It Cost: $10*
You may find yourself tempted to discard the orange peels after enjoying an orange as a snack. But did you know that citrus rinds—found on fruits like tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, and pomelos—are excellent seed starters? Though they’re not nearly as efficient, you can also use the rinds of lime and lemon in a pinch.

Simply fill the hollowed-out rind with potting soil. Next, plant two of your favorite seeds and give them some water. Once your seeds begin to sprout, separate them into one plant per rind. Once they are fully grown, move the rind to a planter or garden space. The rinds will nourish the remaining plants as they decompose and infuse into the soil.
